Straightpoint has supplied its 12t Loadlink Plus to UK-based Larkin Eng Services for the load test of a weather station's lifting points that is being used in Europe's first commercial floating offshore wind measurement campaign.

According to the manufacturer, the weather station's lifting points were proof tested to ensure the greatest load that can be applied without straining them beyond the elastic limit.

Safe lifting

This guaranteed the weather station could be safely lifted and transported to the DONG Energy and FLiDAR offshore wind measurement campaign, which is located in the Irish Sea.

Larkin Eng Services was tasked with the need to proof load test the weather station that weighed a total of 6.5t. This ensuring that the station was balanced when deployed by sea, a goal acheived by calculating the safe working load, so it could be lifted safely by the lifting points.

Elsewhere, an additional 25% of the total weight was added to the buoy by adding heavy chains to ensure the working load was safe to lift.

Larkin built a structure to enable the lifting of the equipment from dockside onto a boat while the buoy was then lifted by crane off the boat and also before being lowered into the water.

Straightpoint's technology recorded all the individual test weights, from the individual components, to the overall finished product, as well as the total including the additional test weights.

Accurate readouts

Each individual weighed component was totalled and then compared against the total weight reading, which ensured the accuracy of the readouts from Straightpoint's Handheld Plus system, which links directly to the loadcell.

John Dodgson, senior rigging and inspection engineer at Larkin Engineering Services explains: "I have used Straightpoint's products for many years. With over 1 million GBP-worth of equipment being lifted in this project, we had to get it right first time.

"That's why we chose Straightpoint, as we knew we could rely on the accuracy of their loadcell to safely monitor the load."

Trade Show Visitors Note New Load Cell as Straightpoint Targets Aggressive U.S. Growth

Load monitoring technology specialist Straightpoint has put a series of North American trade shows and conferences at the forefront of a five-year growth strategy to expand its U.S. business by 20-30% annually.
Straightpoint Inc., a subsidiary of the U.K. company, has spent the last few months showcasing force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cells at a series of trade shows and industry networking events with visitors taking particular interest in the new version of the Radiolink Plus wireless tension load cell.
The Associated Wire Rope Fabricators (AWRF) Product Information Exhibition (PIE) earlier this month (October) concluded a run of five trade events in six weeks, which included the Slingmax Conference & Major Products Information (SCAMPI), an open house at Mazzella, the Crane & Rigging Conference Canada and the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) Crane & Rigging Workshop. Straightpoint Inc. will also have a presence at other conferences and exhibitions before the end of the year including NACB’s annual Professional Development Conference in Las Vegas next month (November).
David Ayling, director of Straightpoint, said: “We’ve moved to a new U.S. premises in Camarillo, California and welcomed three new staff. It is important that we support this growth by giving existing and potential customers a brand they can identify with, which is a slow but meaningful process involving an ongoing presence at the right trade shows and events. It is no secret that we want to expand further and have additional facilities, starting with one in the Houston area.We have the products to achieve that growth".

Launch of New Radiolink Plus™ Loadcell

As well as these new enhancements, the Radiolink Plus™ product still retains its core safety and accuracy features, such as its inbuilt audible overload alarm for when items being lifted are nearing their maximum load; a long battery life of 1600 hours; damage and weather-resistant internal antennae and an unrivalled strength to weight ratio due to the advanced design structure from high-quality aircraft grade aluminium, making it very lightweight and easy to carry. The product also comes with a wireless handheld remote, which means that the system can be operated up to 250 metres or 800 feet away by its user, safely away from the item being measured. New Straightpoint load cell

Straightpoint, a UK manufacturer of force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cells, have launched a brand new version of their bestselling wireless tension loadcell, the Radiolink Plus™.

The brand new version of the Radiolink Plus™ includes a new chassis and circuitry, together with a more streamlined shape, making it even more robust and practical than before. For example, the new design achieves IP67 protection even with the battery cover missing, ideal for use in marine and offshore conditions. In addition, the battery section now boasts reverse polarity protection, shielding the product from damage if the batteries are inserted the wrong way around. The square corners of the loadcell have also been replaced by a new design, which gives it more ability to move in a clevis, widely used within marine, rigging, automotive, aircraft, offshore and construction industries.  The new design, together with its new internal antenna mount, has also resulted in an enhancement to the product's span, giving the user a 360 degree range to read loads.
